Most people assume that having a strong immune system is a good thing to protect you from disease and infection, but what happens to your immune system when you are on your period? Can having your period can make you more susceptible to catching illnesses? Well, no more fretting ladies, it’s time to discuss!

Your immune system, put simply, works to fight off infection. It can also, on occasion, work against you, causing chronic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes. When you eat healthy food and stay active, you are strengthening your immune system, making it more able to fight off infection. When you eat junk food and stay stressed for long periods of time, you are weakening it, and therefore making infection more likely.

Understanding how your immune system functions can help you work on staying healthy and avoiding illnesses. Unfortunately, when it comes to how the menstrual cycle can impact the immune system there isn't exactly a ton of research. But from the research that does exist, hormones like oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone, can have an impact on the immune system and its functions.

How Can My Hormones Disrupt My Immune System?

A study conducted by researchers at Oxford University found that when oestrogen levels drop during ovulation, the immune system is somewhat suppressed. This is because the hormone progesterone wants to encourage a pregnancy, while the immune cells want to fight off all foreign invaders in the body. So, the immune cells try to attack a fertilised egg and therefore stop a pregnancy from occurring, and the progesterone works to stop them. This  all contributes to the ability to conceive around ovulation. 

So depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle, and what hormones are working hardest, research does show that at certain times you may have an increased chance of being susceptible to catching illnesses. Wild, huh! 

So When Am I Most Likely To Get Sick During My Period?

During the follicular phase of your menstrual cycle (usually starting from the first day of the period until ovulation), your oestrogen levels are rising, so you will probably have higher levels of antibodies making you less susceptible to infection. If you suffer with a chronic condition, this rise in oestrogen does not automatically mean you will be feeling your best, as it is sometimes found to worsen any pre-existing conditions. Unfortunately, it's a win-lose scenario here! 

During the luteal phase of your cycle (after ovulation), the immune system is suppressed and much less likely to react to any invading illnesses. As mentioned above, this is due to rising levels of progesterone, as well as changes in testosterone levels. This time, those with chronic illnesses may find their symptoms improve during the luteal phase, depending on the disease. 

And finally, during the menstruation part of your period, and in the days leading up to this, oestrogen levels remain low. Strangely, menstruation itself (rather than hormones) is often associated with an increase in inflammation, though it is not clear why. People with chronic issues may experience worse symptoms again, as inflammatory responses return to normal. 

Understanding how your menstrual cycle can affect your immune system is always helpful, and especially during this time. Remember that being at the point in your menstrual cycle where your immune system is lower, does not mean you are destined to get sick, and it definitely doesn’t mean you are definitely going to become ill with some seasonal virus. Additional stress can affect your immune system too, so staying calm, staying at home, and following medical advice is always encouraged as a best practice for staying healthy.

What You Need to Know About Periods and Your Immune System

Ovarian cancer is thankfully very rare; it makes up only around 3% of cancers in women, but just like with all conditions, having an awareness of the signs and symptoms can be life saving. We’re not about scaremongering here at Yoppie, but we are about supporting female health: the good, the bad and the dangerous. So, we’re breaking down what’s useful to know about ovarian cancer so you’re always aware of what to watch out for.

Ovarian cancer can take one of over 30 different forms, and most are caused when tumors develop in the:

Epithelial cells - found on the outer layer of the ovary

Stromal cells - the ones that produce and release hormones

In the case of epithelial ovarian tumors, these are usually benign, but the ones that are cancerous account for 85-90% of all ovarian cancers. Cancerous tumors appear in the germ cells in less than 2% of cases, and these are usually in teens and women in their 20s. Lastly, cancerous tumours that appear in stromal cells make up only 1% of all cases. There are other types of ovarian cancers, but the three mentioned here are most common.

Ovarian cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose in the early stages because the symptoms are so varied and similar to what you might experience with other conditions. According to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC), only around 19% of cases are diagnosed in the early stages because there often appear to be no symptoms. That’s why we’re keen to share knowledge of possible early stage symptoms. You should never automatically worry that any of the below are ovarian cancer, but they may be a reason to consult your doctor and get the tests that they recommend. Here are seven signs to keep in mind:

A long-lasting bloated or swollen tummy 

A loss of appetite, and/or feeling full quickly after you eat 

Pain in the lower stomach or back (if you experience unexplained abdominal symptoms for more than 2 weeks you should always consult a doctor)

Needing to urinate more frequently/urgently, and/or changes in your usual bowel habits (you may notice diarrhoea or constipation)

Vaginal bleeding after menopause (Over 50s experiencing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome for the first time should also speak to a doctor)

As you have probably already guessed, all of the above symptoms can be attributed to a large number of other non-life threatening conditions, and are therefore likely nothing to worry about. If however, symptoms persist for a long period of time, you should always discuss them with a doctor.

Remember that while symptoms of ovarian cancer may be hard to detect in the early stages, they can come on very suddenly, so if you have any abrupt changes in your health relating to the above symptoms, don’t wait to get checked over by your doctor for peace of mind.

The above symptoms do not guarantee that a person has ovarian cancer, and tests must be done to determine if this unlikely cause is in fact the reason. Diagnosing the condition usually requires a broad range of tests administered by a specialist doctor who will ask more information about your symptoms, such as; when they began, how often they occur, how they have responded to basic treatment, your medical history, your family history of cancer, and more. 

The doctor will usually do a pelvic exam to feel for any inflammation or enlargement of the ovaries. He/she is also looking for any possible fluid in the abdomen. If ovarian cancer is at all a possibility, the doctor will advise further tests such as blood tests, scans of the pelvic area, and if necessary, biopsies of any suspicious areas, or a laparoscopic investigation. 

As always, it’s important not to panic about suspicious symptoms that could just as easily be a tummy ache! Knowing the symptoms of potentially dangerous female health conditions isn’t about causing paranoia and unnecessary worry, it’s about awareness of changes in your body, and understanding how to broach sensitive topics with your doctor. Stay vigilant when it comes to your health.

7 Symptoms You May Not Realise Are Related To Ovarian Cancer

You’ve most likely heard of pre-menstrual syndrome, but now it’s time to meet PMS’s tardy and oh-so-frustrating cousin, POST-menstrual syndrome. That’s right, this one comes about after your period, but can affect your body and mind in much the same way, if not more than the former.

Whether it’s bloating, lethargy, cravings, unexplained anger or depression, Post-Menstrual Syndrome can do things to you that you can’t always explain, at a time of the month that doesn’t really make sense according to everything you’ve ever read about periods - but it’s all too real for some women. Let’s dive into what Post-Menstrual Syndrome is and what we can do about it...

Post-menstrual syndrome has sort of been thought of as a myth for a long time, given that it’s not a medically recognised mood disorder like premenstrual syndrome or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Still, so many women getting post-menstrual syndrome symptoms can’t be wrong. More than 90% of women report that they get PMS, while only around 10% of women are believed to experience post-menstrual syndrome, that is to say, they get the same symptoms after their periods instead of before.

Just like the premenstrual kind, post-menstrual syndrome affects women’s bodies in the days following the end of their period, and can also cause mood changes. We wrote a whole blog about how hard PMS can be on your mental health, with symptoms ranging from erratic mood swings, to anger, to prolonged periods of depression. Post-menstrual syndrome offers similar feelings, just at a different phase of your cycle. Luckily, if you’re prone to post-menstrual syndrome, then you’re probably not likely to experience premenstrual syndrome, and vice versa. Phew. Nobody needs that kind of drama twice in one month!

Dr Lara Briden, author of the Period Repair Manual, states that she has found post-menstrual syndrome to be mostly associated with situations where ovulation does not occur, like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and some contraceptives. To look at it scientifically, premenstrual syndrome is thought to be triggered by lower levels of progesterone, while post-menstrual syndrome is likely to happen when there is excess oestrogen and androgens in the system.

Standard PMS (the premenstrual kind) has been studied throughout the years, and doctors know the score when it comes to symptoms and treatment. Post-menstrual syndrome, however, isn’t as common or well understood. As well as the above, other triggers were originally thought to be things like vitamin B6 deficiencies, fluctuating glucose metabolism, and electrolyte imbalances, but these have all been disproven in recent years.

What can we do about post-menstrual syndrome?

Knowing that post-menstrual syndrome can be related to conditions like PCOS means it’s always a good idea to investigate the potential underlying reasons for post-period symptoms by speaking to your GP. Similarly, if you are experiencing particularly distressing symptoms such as severe depression or anxiety, then it’s important that you discuss this with your GP too, so they are aware and can talk to you about your options.

Keeping a diary is also advisable, as many women don’t realise for years that what they are experiencing is in fact post-menstrual syndrome. Standard PMS is talked about a lot, but not many women really consider that they may be having issues after their monthly period has gone. Write down how your body and mind feels throughout the month, and try to do this for at least three months in order to establish patterns and recognise symptoms.

As with premenstrual syndrome, there isn’t a huge amount that can completely lift symptoms, but you can start by taking care of yourself. This means eating well and getting a healthy amount of exercise, but it could also mean supplements. Magnesium supplements are thought to help ease the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, and could do the same for post-menstrual syndrome according to Dr Lara Briden. 

Remember that while post-menstrual syndrome is rare compared to regular PMS, it doesn’t make it any less difficult to deal with. Always discuss your symptoms and feelings with your doctor so they can help you work towards improving your situation.

Post Menstrual Syndrome Is Real Too

Time to get clued up on birth control! Hormonal contraceptives work for a lot of people, but like most things they have their downsides, so it’s always good to be knowledgeable of everything you are putting into and on your body.

According to the National Cancer Institute, there is contrasting evidence that hormonal contraceptives could increase the risk of breast and cervical cancer due to progestogen and oestrogen stimulating the growth of certain cancer cells. Conversely, hormonal contraceptives have long been thought to improve conditions like endometrial and ovarian cancers, so it’s hard to know what’s best.

Here is a breakdown of all the hormonal birth control options you may be curious about.

The vaginal ring is a small plastic ring that is placed inside your vagina and releases a continuous dose of oestrogen and progestogen (aka, hormones) to prevent pregnancy. When used as it should be, the vaginal ring is more than 99% effective - score! The hormones oestrogen and progestogen go into your bloodstream and prevent the release of an egg each month.

Upsides: A ring offers contraception for a whole month, so you don't have to think about it every day

Downsides: Some experience temporary side effects like excess vaginal discharge, breast tenderness and headaches.

The Progestogen-only pill is most useful for those who can't take oestrogen-based contraceptives. The Progestogen-only Pill is more than 99% effective if taken correctly, which means you should be taking a pill every day with no break between packs.

Upsides: Users may find their periods become lighter, and it’s handy if you don’t fancy fumbling for a condom before sex.

Downsides: Some women report side effects like acne and breast tenderness, but with continued use this should clear up eventually. You must also remember to take your pill around the same time daily, which gives you additional life admin.

The contraceptive patch is a small patch that sticks to the skin and releases hormones into your body. This is another method of contraception that is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. Each applied patch works for 1 week before it needs changing. You should do this three times and then have one week patch-free for your period. Every day the patch is applied, it releases daily oestrogen and progestogen into your system to prevent pregnancy.

Upsides: The idea of wearing a patch may seem strange, but they’re pretty handy, and usable in the bath, while swimming, and even if you get sweaty while exercising. It’s also useful as you don’t need to think about it on a daily basis.

Downsides: It’s worth knowing in advance that this method of contraception has been linked to increased blood pressure, and side effects such as headaches.

An IUD is a very small, T-shaped plastic device that is inserted into your womb by a professional, and releases progestogen to stop pregnancy. One device lasts 3-5 years depending on the brand, and is more than 99% effective. The IUD thickens cervical mucus and makes it difficult for sperm to travel to the egg, as well as thinning the womb lining so the egg cannot attach.

Upsides: You don’t need to think about birth control for a very long time - yay! If you do want to get pregnant at any time you can simply have it removed by a professional. It tends to make periods lighter, shorter or stop them altogether, which is handy for many women.

Downsides: The implantation can be pretty painful, and side effects are always possible, like mood swings or skin issues.

If you’re not a fan of needles, this one probably isn’t for you, but if not then the contraceptive injection could be a good option. Depending on the brand, the injection could protect you anywhere from 8 to 13 weeks, releasing progestogen into your bloodstream regularly and preventing eggs from being released during ovulation. This too is more than 99% effective.

Upsides: It’s nice if you don’t want to interrupt sex for birth control, and the long useage time means you don’t need to worry about contraception for several weeks. 

Downsides: Side effects include weight gain, headaches, mood swings, breast tenderness and irregular bleeding. One difference with the injection is that it may not be suitable if you are considering starting a family in the near future - it can take up to 1 year for fertility to return to normal, so keep this in mind when discussing options with your doctor.

The contraceptive implant is a small, flexible plastic stick inserted under the skin of the arm by a professional. It releases progestogen at regular intervals into the bloodstream to prevent pregnancy, and one stick lasts 3 years, being more than 99% effective.

Upsides: It’s a popular long-term choice, and can be removed at any time to quickly return to your natural fertility. There’s no need to think about it before sex, as it has you covered for 3 years. It’s also an option if you can't use oestrogen-based birth control like the combined pill.

Downsides: Local anaesthetic makes it relatively painless, but the idea of having a piece of plastic under your skin can understandably freak some women out! You may experience some initial bruising and tenderness around the implant, and your periods may become irregular and possibly heavier, but this all depends on the individual.

The combined pill is arguably the most common form of birth control as it’s usually one of the first methods to be prescribed by doctors. Referred to as simply "the pill", it introduces oestrogen and progestogen to the system through a daily tablet, normally taken for 21 days, followed by 7 days without a pill. During this time you will usually have your period.

Upsides: When taken correctly, the pill is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It is often used to treat issues such as heavy and painful periods, acne, or even endometriosis.

Downsides: While the pill is over 99% effective, it’s probably the form of contraception least likely to be taken correctly, as it’s easy to accidentally skip a day, or for it to be rendered ineffective due to diarrhea or vomiting. Plus you could experience side effects like mood swings, nausea, breast tenderness and headaches.

The simple answer? There is truly no one-size-fits-all approach to birth control. Some of the above methods will not be safe for all women, just as some will be inconvenient, or simply won’t suit based on the potential side effects.

It’s always best to discuss the options with your doctor, answer any medical questions they have (honestly, as some lifestyle factors like smoking can put you at risk with certain contraceptives) and know that you may have to try a few options out before you settle on something that fits your body. It's a bit like speed dating!  And remember, none of the above mentioned options offer protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Hormonal Contraceptives: What Are Your Options?

Endometriosis is a chronic disease and can be, for some, incredibly painful and debilitating. If you are a woman who has suffered from any sort of abdominal discomfort, you may come across Endometriosis during your search for answers. While not every pang of pain in your belly is going to mean you have Endo, it’s certainly worth knowing more about it to ensure you aren’t overlooking its possible symptoms, especially since it is thought that 1 in 10 women of reproductive age in the UK have it. 

"I was recently diagnosed after years of suffering and finding myself doubled over backstage in the middle of my sets, or fighting back tears on an airplane, or even being in so much pain I would vomit or faint… Finding out that I had Endo was the most bittersweet moment because it meant I wasn’t crazy!"

Endometriosis happens when tissue similar to that of the lining of your uterus (endometrium) begins to grow outside of the uterus. It shouldn’t be there, so it starts to cause all sorts of problems. These growths are sometimes called lesions, and can cause severe pain and inflammation throughout the month, not limited to during your period.

According to SpeakEndo.com, when considering symptoms of Endometriosis you should remember the three Ps; painful periods, pelvic pain, and pain with sex. If you do suffer from these three symptoms, it’s advised that you speak to your doctor to discuss the possibility of Endometriosis (although if you have even one of these symptoms, you can still talk to your GP, as none should be occurring). Other symptoms to look out for are:

Pain and difficulty going to the bathroom to urinate or move your bowels

Heavy bleeding during periods, and bleeding or spotting between periods

Feeling nauseous or faint during your period

Difficulty participating in day-to-day activities due to pain or weakness

As well as the above, it is estimated that around 20% of women with endometriosis also suffer from other chronic pain conditions such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), cystitis, and fibromyalgia.

Whether you have one or all of the above symptoms, endometriosis is notoriously hard to diagnose because symptoms vary so drastically from woman to woman. For this reason, it is often only officially diagnosed by exclusion, which essentially means by process of elimination, and this can take months, if not years.

“It’s not just during your period, it’s throughout the month… It makes me so tired that I’m extremely nauseous. It’s very debilitating. I can’t get up in the morning sometimes or it interferes with my daily activities. It really has affected my quality of life.”

Endometriosis is so different for each individual sufferer. It’s important to speak up about your symptoms so your doctor can help you diagnose possible endo and treat it in the best way. Having helpful conversations with your doctor can lead to better understanding of your particular case, and a potential quicker diagnosis overall. At the end of the day, pain isn’t normal. If you are at all unsure, talk to your doctor about what you’re feeling and don’t be afraid to be persistent if something doesn’t feel right.

While there is currently no known cure for endometriosis, your doctor might recommend painkillers, hormonal birth control, medications to reduce estrogen levels, a procedure called a Laparoscopy to diagnose and remove Endo lesions, and a number of other treatments. Understanding your symptoms and being able to communicate how you feel to your doctor, family, friends and even colleagues at work, can help you gain the support and treatment you need to reduce the pain you experience.

Endo Feels: What Endometriosis Feels Like, and How to Tell If You Have It

Today’s article looks drizzly with a chance of showers and a few dry spells, and we’re on board for all of it. Yes, we’re talking all things discharge, arousal fluid, lubricants, and all that juicy stuff. 

Firstly let’s clarify how ‘getting wet’ is different from discharge; ‘wetness’ often refers to when someone is aroused and their vagina produces fluid to make it easier for a penis to slip on in there, while ‘discharge’ (otherwise known as leukorrhea), is a general term used for anything fluid-like that emerges from the vagina. 

So before we discuss the sexy stuff, we should clear up what discharge actually is. 

Discharge comes in all consistencies, colours and volumes, and everyone experiences a different type of discharge down there. For the most part, it’s pretty normal. Here’s a vagina vocab lesson: 

Discharge: a general term for all the fluids you see leaving in the vaginal fluid. This is usually made up of cervical mucus and bacteria

Cervical fluid: a type of discharge originating from the cervix, which changes at specific points in your menstrual cycle. Its job changes throughout the month to either encourage or stop sperm from passing through the cervix.

Arousal fluid: Don't be fooled by its incredibly un-sexy name; this is the body's response to being turned on (or in some cases, a response inconveniently triggered for no reason at all)

Feeling fluids come out of your vagina is nothing to worry about, as it’s your vagina’s way of naturally cleaning itself. However, being tuned in to your own discharge characteristics, patterns and where they appear in your cycle is always positive, as this makes it easier to notice changes and spot any abnormalities if they come up (or, erm… out). 

There’s a whole ecosystem in your vagina (cool, right?) maintaining a fine balance of bacteria and a specific pH to keep it healthy (2). Changes to this can lead to changes in your vaginal fluid, meaning possible issues, so knowing typical colours to watch for is advised. 

Whether it’s clear, white, yellow, green, red, pink or even grey, you’ll want to understand what could be going on inside to cause this. Significant changes in colour, consistency or smell could indicate you need to get a GP checkup. 

How to find and feel your cervical fluid 💧

If you want to get to know your cervical fluid, you can use your fingers to feel for fluid at the entryway to your vagina, or at your cervix directly.  

When you feel, consider feeling for changes in the consistency (e.g. pasty, slippery), amount, and colour of the fluid, along with the sensation at your vaginal opening (like whether it is wet or dry).

Another way is to look for fluid on your toilet paper. Cervical fluid is often visible on the paper and typically looks a little different from other vaginal moisture, because of its thickness and consistency.

Also be aware that it’s possible to confuse ejaculate (semen) or arousal fluid for cervical fluid, even up to a day after sex! 

How does your cycle affect discharge? 🩸

You’ll typically experience up to a teaspoon’s worth (around 1-4 mL) daily of clear or white discharge, but this can fluctuate throughout your menstrual cycle, particularly if you’re not on hormonal birth control. As oestrogen and progesterone levels rise and fall, your body is essentially preparing for a possible pregnancy, and this changes the quality and quantity of your vaginal discharge. 

For example, during ovulation, your body increases its oestrogen levels and prepares for the arrival of sperm to fertilise those eggs (otherwise known as sexy time). As a result, additional discharge increases the lubrication for sex and, in theory, makes it easier. 

Many a porno has made us believe that getting wet is an instantaneous reaction to seeing anything remotely arousing. While this can be true for some, many people would agree that it is neither that simple nor that easy. 

“Getting wet” basically means you’re prepped for sex and ready to go. It’s the job of the Bartholin’s glands (next to the vaginal opening) and the Skene’s glands (near the urethra) to produce the natural lubrication needed for sexual activity, and this happens as a physical and psychological response to something that turns you on (5). When this happens, blood rushes to the genital area, increasing sensitivity there. 

As mentioned, some people find it easy to get wet, while others find that there are multiple factors at play, such as where they are in their cycle, how much foreplay has gone down, their mental state, stress levels, medications they may be taking (such as hormonal birth control or antidepressants), or something else. 

The best thing to do if you’re struggling to feel that wetness you need to get going, is to talk to your partner about what you need, or just use a lubricant to kick-start the process. For many women, common issues such as vaginal dryness after pregnancy or during the menopause can be made instantly more comfortable with something as simple as lubricant, which in turn can increase your own natural arousal. If this feels icky to discuss, know that according to an Indiana University study, 70% of 2,453 women surveyed said lube made sex more pleasurable, so it’s a pretty common option, and nothing to be ashamed of. Lube for all, we say!

Why do you sometimes get wet without the arousal? ✨

We’ve all been there; you’re out and about, minding your own business, and BAM; you need to make a quick trip to the loo to check what’s going on down there. What feels like an unexpected period is sometimes just some random wetness that seemingly comes from nowhere at all. Perhaps your eyes glanced over a poster of Henry Cavill’s new movie. Perhaps you were just reeeally into the doughnut you were eating. Or perhaps it was just… nothing. 

Sometimes your body has those moments, and it’s nothing to worry about - your vagina has a lot of sweat and oil glands working to keep things balanced, so random, unidentifiable wetness can often be attributed to this.

Don’t mention the M word! It’s what every woman dreads, or so we’re told, but why? When you’re young, you tend to believe that all those hot flushes and ‘old lady worries’ are for the future. While there’s certainly nothing to worry about, there are many myths surrounding the menopause that we’re keen to dispel, in order to get more young women talking about and preparing for this inevitable change.

Menopause generally comes around age 45 to 55, but it’s actually possible for it to begin as early as your 30s, and in rare cases your 20s. So, it’s good to be knowledgeable and prepared, and know that some of the myths you’ve heard just aren’t true. For example:

You’ll hit 50 and bam! The menopause arrives (Nope. It’s not as simple as one day period, the next day gone)

You can’t get menopause symptoms while still having periods (Not true! You can definitely experience the symptoms of menopause before your period disappears)

You’ll get fat (Wrong. Not everyone experiences weight gain during menopause)

Your sex drive disappears (Wrong again. Everyone’s libido acts differently)

You can’t prepare for menopause (False! And we’re about to tell you why…)

Menopause tends not to be discussed. It’s seen as a sign of ageing, and therefore something that a lot of women feel ashamed about. In fact, menopause comes to us all, so at Yoppie we believe in having more open, honest conversations about it, so that every woman can feel prepared and comfortable when it arrives. Menopause can’t be prevented, but there are things we can all do to make it a little easier and more comfortable.

First of all, what is the difference between perimenopause and menopause?

Perimenopause begins several years before menopause does, and is when your ovaries gradually begin to make less estrogen. This phase usually starts in your 40s, and lasts until the ovaries stop releasing eggs altogether, which is called menopause.

Menopause officially means you haven’t had a period for 12 months, but many women find that it’s not as black-and-white as this. That’s why the term perimenopause tends to cover the ambiguous period before menopause. Perimenopause lasts on average four years, but some women experience it for as little as a few months, others as much as ten years, depending on the individual.

The only symptom of menopause that seems to be openly talked about is hot flushes, with many a comedy movie poking fun at this side effect.

In fact, you could also experience weight gain, loss of energy, forgetfulness, vaginal dryness, low sex drive, trouble sleeping, hair thinning and loss, anxiety or depression, or a combination of a few. These symptoms are all completely normal, but two things are important to know;

First, you do not have to live with being uncomfortable. If symptoms are affecting your life, visit your GP to discuss possible treatments to minimise the negative effects. Secondly, know that if you are feeling scared or depressed about the changes, this is also very common and normal. Your body may start to feel a little alien due to all the unexpected things it’s doing. Try not to bottle these feelings up. Talk to your GP about a plan of action. 

Also, don’t be afraid to talk about menopause with your partner, your friends, and anyone you trust who may be able to understand and support you during what is undoubtedly a difficult time for lots of women. Menopause has notoriously been known as a topic that just isn’t talked about, so don’t be afraid to start those conversations.

“I was forced into menopause by chemotherapy - a bit of a double whammy! But I have to say I sailed through with the exception of the hot flushes, which still show up 8 years later at the most inappropriate times. A paper fan is now my best friend! I certainly don’t miss periods as they were always exhausting, and I enjoy the freedom this time of life gives me. The good news is my friends are in the same boat so we can always laugh about it.”

How can young women prepare in advance? 

If you haven’t yet hit this period in your life, there are some things you can do to prepare your body for the change.

If you have worries about your impending menopause (due to a family member’s experience or past health concerns) discuss this with your doctor. They may suggest you have your blood tested, which will offer insight into your hormone levels, specifically your estrogen, testosterone and thyroid. Knowing how these fluctuate can help you identify changes to come, and rule out any other health issues.

Get clued up on everything. Menopause research is developing every day, so keeping up to date with the latest scientific advances and remedies for symptoms will automatically put you ahead of the game when you begin to experience the signs. The information can be overwhelming, but simply knowing what to expect will stand you in good stead. 

Chat to older women in your life. Not everyone will want to discuss the topic, as it’s still considered somewhat taboo to the older generation. However, if you have the opportunity to explain why you want to learn more, you may want to ask about their personal experiences and advice on how best to manage the change. 

Take your health seriously, no matter your age. Considering your diet, implementing a regular exercise routine, and actively working to reduce your stress levels can all make positive impacts on the menopause symptoms you experience later in life.

Menopause: Myths, Symptoms and How To Prepare At Any Age

*Fans face* Heavens! Period sex? Yes, we’re going there today. You may think the only time your menstrual cycle affects your sex life is during that time of the month, but in fact there’s a whole lot going on that you may not even realise. From your cervix to your emotions, everything changes depending on where you are in your cycle. If you’re curious to learn more about the relationship between your period and sexy time, then read on.

Every woman is different, but generally our sex drive tends to peak during ovulation, which happens roughly 14 days before getting our next period. You might feel a little sexier during this time, appreciate your body more, and possibly seek out attention from your partner. In short; this is what horny feels like!

The spike in your estrogen hormone makes you feel this way during the most fertile time in your cycle so that you will be more inclined to reproduce. Of course, we know that sex isn’t just for making babies, but evolutionary speaking that’s your body’s goal.

Ah, but wait! You’re wondering why you feel (possibly more) interested in sex during your period - good question. While your estrogen is at its highest during ovulation, your period (when the uterus is shedding its endometrial lining) can bring on feelings of friskiness too, thanks to the small surge in testosterone. This is generally known as the hormone that makes men want to have more sex, but it’s present in the female body too. Even more so during their period, and it can lead to an increase in libido around this time.

Can I have sex while on my period? And is it gross? 

Being on your period is the time of month when you are least likely to get pregnant. It’s still possible during this time, but as your uterus is shedding its lining there generally isn’t anywhere for a fertilised egg to grab onto and grow. So in theory, this is the safest time in your cycle to have sex if you are trying to avoid pregnancy, but with that being said it is always a good idea to use contraception for extra protection.

When it comes to actually having sex while on their period, every woman views this differently. You may find you have no desire to do this while having your period, whether due to cramping, bloating, excessive bleeding, lethargy, or just plain not-in-the-mood-ness. This is perfectly OK, and at no point in your cycle can anyone make you feel like you should be having sex. 

If you do find yourself curious about having sex while menstruating, there’s nothing wrong with this either! As long as you are comfortable and happy to give it a try, then there is no health risk to having sex on your period. It’s usually best to give the other person a heads up, since depending on where you are in your cycle (and the heaviness of your own personal flow) there could be some blood on display, and it’s possible this will transfer to bedsheets, clothes, etc. Some find the whole thing awkward, embarrassing or messy. Others don’t mind one bit. So forget what everyone else thinks and do what feels right for you and your partner.

The position of your cervix in your abdomen actually shifts slightly depending on where you are in your cycle, which can affect certain sex positions. You might find that when your cervix is lower in your abdomen (during your period) it’s more at risk of being ‘nudged’ during sex. This is no biggy for your cervix, but not the most pleasant sensation, so you may wish to experiment with a few different sex positions until you find what works best for you.

Remember, not everyone is comfortable having sex during their period, and that’s absolutely fine. If your body gives you those sexy signals during your period, it’s OK to explore those. If, however, you’d rather cuddle up on the sofa with a big bar of chocolate and menstruate in peace, then that’s exactly what you should do.

Sexy Cycles: How Your Menstrual Cycle Can Affect Your Sex Life

So you’ve had the dreaded letter inviting you to your cervical screening exam? Never fear! Whether it’s been a few years since your last exam, or you’re brand new to this medical encounter, we’re breaking down exactly what you can expect at a cervical screening exam. Let’s get to it!

Cervical screening, otherwise known as a smear test, is a short exam which checks the health of your cervix. It’s nothing to worry about, but many women put off going for years due to fear of pain, embarrassment, or because they don’t feel it necessary. It is important that you DO NOT avoid your cervical screening exam for any reason. The test is a preventative measure to catch any signs of cervical cancer as early as possible, and anyone with a cervix in the UK should get regular smear tests from age 25 onwards. 

The nurse or doctor conducting your test will have a close look at your cervix and take a small sample of cells from your cervix to check for a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV).

HPV is the name for a very common group of viruses. Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by infection from certain types of HPV, so your smear test helps identify if this bug is present or not.

You can get HPV from a sexual partner from any kind of contact with the genital area, not just from penetrative sex, and most people will get some type of HPV during their lives, so don’t worry if you are found to have this.

If you do have HPV present, the cells will be examined under a microscope to check there are no cancerous or precancerous changes caused by this bug.

Cervical screening exams are usually done by a female nurse or doctor, but if not, remember you can request a female doctor at any time, to make you feel more comfortable. They can answer any questions you have before they begin. If you want to see what happens during a test,this short animation on the NHS website is helpful.

You might be asked a few questions; for example if you are sexually active, where you are in your menstrual cycle, if you are using any contraception or hormone therapies, and if you have any symptoms such as unusual bleeding or pain. You might be offered testing for sexually transmitted infections at this appointment.

Firstly, you’ll be asked to undress from the waist down behind a screen. This may feel a bit awkward, but you'll be given a sheet to put over you.

Next, you’ll lie back on a bed, usually with your legs bent, and your knees apart. In some cases you may be asked to place your legs into stirrups. Being so exposed can feel uncomfortable, but try to remember that your nurse will have seen many, many vaginas before yours!

They will insert a tube-shaped tool called a speculum into your vagina, using a small amount of lubricant to allow it to slide in easily. When they open the speculum, it feels a bit stretchy, as the speculum is wider than a tampon, but shouldn’t be painful. If you do feel pain here, let your nurse or doctor know, they might be able to use a smaller speculum size.

Once the speculum is inserted, the doctor or nurse might need to wiggle it a little to bring your cervix into view. They will take a good look at the cervix, making sure everything looks healthy. A small sample of cells will be taken from your cervix using a soft brush. Though the instrument used is soft to the touch, the very act of anything touching your cervix can feel unpleasant, so you may wish to take some deep breaths during this part, which should only take a few seconds at most.

Remember: You can ask the nurse to stop at any time if you feel uncomfortable or experience any pain, and begin again when you feel more relaxed.

Once the sample of cells have been collected, the speculum is removed and you are free! You will probably be given some tissue to wipe away any remaining lubricant, and then you can re-dress behind the screen.

Some things you may want to do before and during the test to make it easier:

Wear something long that can be pulled up, such as a skirt or a long top

Bring along a friend or partner who can put your mind at ease

Practice some breathing exercises you can use during the test

Bring something to read or listen to, to take your mind off of what’s going on

Don’t be afraid to tell the nurse if you feel embarrassed, as they are usually very understanding and will help you through the process

A lot of people like to have a shower or bath before their test to help them feel less embarrassed, but don't feel like you need to go mad down there and definitely don't use anything more than water and unscented soap. Wear clothes that are quick and easy to take off and on, especially below the waist (leave the cute jumpsuit for another day). It's recommended to avoid going for a smear test when you're on your period as it can interfere with the results, so if your bleed surprises you, just ask to rearrange. For similar reasons, avoid having penetrative sex for 24 hours before your test if you're using spermicides, barrier contraception like a condom of diaphragm, or any lubricants.

The hard part is over! You may experience some gentle cramping and light spotting in the hours after your cervical screening test. This is very normal and nothing to worry about. If the bleeding becomes heavy, speak to your GP to make sure everything is as it should be.

Normally you will receive the results of your test via letter around 2 weeks after your appointment. These can sometimes take longer to get to you, so don’t worry if this happens. If you have any concerns, call your GP.

Regularity of appointments depends on your age and where you live. In England, the typical schedule is

First smear test: around the age of 25, you may be invited up to 6 months before you turn 25

64+: screening by invite, only if one of your last 3 tests was abnormal

You may be asked to attend more often if HPV is found, or if you have required treatment to your cervix in the past. Let’s face it, nobody enjoys a cervical screening test! They can feel embarrassing, invasive, and very uncomfortable, but they are necessary. Your health is important, and the benefits of catching any abnormal cells early far, far outweigh the small inconvenience of a cervical screening exam. 

Even if you feel you have waited too long after being invited to book your screening, know that it’s never too late. If you are in any doubt, call your GP to find out when you should next be seen.

Smear Fear: What To Expect At Your Cervical Screening

We’re all about embarrassing body issues here at Yoppie, especially the ones that no one else wants to discuss. One that’s usually kept hush-hush is urinary incontinence after giving birth. Postpartum urinary incontinence is when urine involuntary leaks, brought on by anything from laughter, coughing, sneezing, or just strenuous activity. It’s very common after giving birth, with more than a third of new mums suffering from it. So… let’s talk about it!

Postpartum incontinence happens when pregnancy and the trauma of childbirth put lasting strain on your pelvic-floor muscles. You might already have experienced incontinence during pregnancy, as many women do. This may have been mild and manageable while pregnant, but after giving birth can become a more significant issue, as the delivery can weaken the muscles around your bladder and pelvis. Also, as your uterus shrinks back after delivering your baby, it sits right on your bladder, applying more pressure still.

Picture the bladder as a balloon, and the tied part of the balloon is the urethra. The fuller your bladder becomes, the tighter the sphincter muscles around the urethra squeeze to keep the urine inside. During childbirth these muscles are stretched, and this, combined with changing hormones, means you may experience a weak bladder. In fact, it is not the bladder causing the issue, it is the weakened ligaments - who knew?!

Age and body mass index often contribute to postpartum incontinence, but it can affect anyone after they have given birth, along with a whole bunch of other bodily changes. Even women who have given birth via C-section could experience some degree of postpartum incontinence. Plus, it’s good to know that if you had an epidural you could experience more bladder weakness for a few days after giving birth.

How long will it take to regain bladder control?

It usually takes around 3-6 months for the bladder to return to ‘normal’ and regain control once again. This can be made even shorter by paying attention to these tips:

Kegel exercises: These help to strengthen the muscles, and can be done as often as you can manage after giving birth. Things like stopping your wee mid-stream during urination, and building up the length of time you hold for, could help. The more you do Kegel exercises, the quicker you will notice your muscles return to normal.

Train your bladder: As well as training the muscles with Kegel exercises, try to urinate every 30 minutes before there is enough urine buildup to lead to incontinence. You can then start to slowly extend the time between loo visits.

Avoid constipation: Paying attention to your diet to avoid constipation can help, as added pressure from the bowels can worsen incontinence.

Drink enough: You may think limiting your water intake helps, but this puts you at risk of dehydration and urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Avoid certain drinks: Too much coffee, citrus juices and alcohol can worsen urinary incontinence.

Wear liners or pads: Absorb any leakages to feel more confident when you’re out and about.

Remember that urinary incontinence is very common, but many women are embarrassed to discuss it with their partner, friends, or even their doctor.

During your postpartum period, you will usually have appointments booked in with a healthcare professional who will be monitoring both your baby’s health and your postpartum journey. Don’t be afraid to let them know if you are suffering from any type of urinary incontinence. Aside from the above tips, your nurse or doctor will have other treatment options available that they can discuss with you, and together you can figure out the best way to proceed
